"This was taken on the Toyota 1,000km Desert Race 2002 - boneshaker and car wrecker - in the Kalahari Desert.
"It is quite normal for two-thirds of the pack to drop out, most of them on the first day. Surprisingly perhaps, people don't often get hurt (except that most drivers suffer back problems by the time they quit the sport)."
