Kay adds:

"A few years back Dave and I spent a few days at Kochi (formerly Cochin) down in Kerala State on India's Malabar Coast in the south-west of the peninsula. The Old Town of Kochi is on a spit of land at the mouth of a large natural harbour, and at the end of that spit of land are a battery of fishing-nets suspended on booms.

"The design's quite unusual for the sub-continent – apparently it's of Chinese origin. It was quite something to see the fishermen hauling away on the ropes to retrieve their catch."
