View of the Khyber Pass between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Khyber Pass

Kay adds:

"I took this photo when I was working up in Peshawar with Afghan refugees. The North West Frontier Province is a pretty lawless place - as those who've read Kipling (or seen Carry On Up The Khyber) will have heard - and much in the news in recent years with the attempts to track down Al Qaeda.

"There is a frontier post between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with a border fence, but if you go up into the mountains for a couple of hundred yards you can just go round the fence. Not that I ever did, of course!"
