My name is Steve Upton and I am working on the history of schools for Western children in pre-1950 China. My address is Steve Upton, P.O. Box 177, Concord, NH 03302-0177 USA. I have some questions about the Shanghai British School (SBS) curriculum, and it is my hope that some of its former students can help me through this forum or by writing to me. Here are some questions: 1. Were any languages other than English, Chinese, and French taught at SBS? 2. With regard to the Chinese language instruction at SBS, was the language Mandarin or Shanghainese, or was it simply a course in learnimg to read and write some Chinese characters? 3. In the Chinese language course at SBS, did the students learn to use ink brushes to write Chinese characters? 4. Were any booklets for reading or writing Chinese characters used in the Chinese language course at SBS? 5. Does anyone recall being taught anything about Chinese history, Chinese geography, or Chinese culture (other than language) while at SBS? 6. Does anyone remember any instruction in music, singing, art, or dance at SBS? 7. Does anyone remember taking a course in Morals, or a course in Scripture, while at SBS? 8. Were any SBS students who had to leave Shanghai abruptly in 1949 provided with any type of a School Leaving Certificate or other evidence of the extent to which they had completed their studies at SBS? With best regards, Steve Upton, PO Box 177, Concord, NH 03302-0177 USA.
