Beer and body language

The way men hold their pints gives away their character, psychologists say. There are six basic poses:

the libidinous style: the glass is held tightly in the middle with the back arched, the hips moving, and the non-pint-holding hand is used to make a series of grand gestures.

the self-righteous style: the glass is held out in front, almost as if the drinker is making a toast.

the deep thinker style: the drinker looks into his pint reflectively, occasionally fondling the glass gently.

the Jack the lad style: the drinker grasps his pint like a weapon, arm outstretched, risking spillage, arms often apart and wildly gesticulating.

the anally retentive style: the drinker hunches over the pint protectively.

the hen-pecked style: the drinker holds his pint near the chin with a slightly cowering look.

The survey of drinkers was carried out for Guinness.

Dr Dave reports: Beer in Thailand comes in a pretty limited number of shapes and sizes - the main thing is that they're cold! Unsurprisingly, most of them are lager-type. (The exception is Guinness, but at £4.75 a pint, it's an expensive way to quench your thirst.) Main varieties:

  • Singha - Probably the biggest seller of the local beers (slogan: "My country, my beer"). Rather darker yellow than your average lager, with quite a sharp, biting taste to it. A bit stronger than the international lagers - about 6%. Used to be my favourite - but it does catch up with you the following morning in the shape of a sorer head than usual. Singha Gold is a more refined version, lighter in taste, colour and alcohol.
  • Kloster - immortalised(?) in One Night In Bangkok by Murray Head. Light yellow in colour, with a clean taste - though it seems a little thin (especially after Singha). The editor's favourite (presumably in spite of the picture of a fluffy cat's head on the bottle).
  • Amarit - very hard to get hold of these days; seems to have been pushed out of the market by the international lagers (comes from the same brewery as Kloster).
  • Carlsberg - relatively new entrant and pretty much the same as anywhere else in the world, really. Apart from the UK, where you get a watered-down inferior product. Beer Chang is the strong version - similar strength to Carlsberg Special, but without the revolting sweetness and not so much of the syrupy texture.
  • Heineken - a more recent entrant. Same story as Carlsberg. (Surprise.) They've recently introduced Amstel too.

You can get other beers (especially in the posh supermarkets), and Strongbow has started to put in an appearance too, but these are the main ones you'll find in the bars.

What do the locals drink where you live? Weird ones are especially welcome but feel free to tell us about local beer brands and if they're any good. The earlier contributions about Pakistani and Korean beers are now in the cellar. (The cellar also contains earlier trivia questions and other pub things.)
