Change in taxation of OR residents after 5 Years residency ?

No, really... it does!
But does it matter more in Malta than at home?

Change in taxation of OR residents after 5 Years residency ?

Postby Nickexpat » Sun 19 Oct 2014 05:56

Does anyone know if there has been a recent change in the taxation of OR residents ? I heard that under new legislation, after 5 years of OR residency in Malta (in our case self sufficiency OR ), our worldwide income will be taxable, not just income remitted to Malta?

I didn't read it Mark, was told by a new, seemingly well informed acquaintance. However having looked on the internet today I think he may have been confused by the following. I will enquire with him further and let you know the outcome.

Mark this is the link to the tax article I was told about. I think "long term" and "permanent" residents are a different resident category to OR residents but I am not well informed on this. Could one become "long term" or "permanent" residents just by being here for a long period of time ?

no

permanent - after 5 years you can apply for a long term eResidence card (ie un dated), but you dont have to, and you have to fulfil certain conditions anyway eg not absent from Malta for more than 300 days in the last 5 years
