Am I missing something?

Amongst the many shortcomings of Windows there's one that I find particularly irritating and frustrating.

My job involves setting up auctions on eBay and, to make our listings more dynamic (as well as to avoid the extra expense of eBay photo hosting) I write them up in HTML with embedded photos hosted by our own web storage.

The problem that I have is when uploading the photos to our storage file manager. When I click Browse the File Upload window pops open and it's always set to List. I then have to change the view to Details and then I have to hit the Date Modified tab before returning the view to Thumbnails so that I can select the photo I want to upload.

So that's at least three steps just to get to where I want to be. And I have to go through the same procedure for each upload.

It's the same with email attachments.

Obviously, it would be a lot easier and more efficient if I click Browse and then simply click the top file. One step instead of three...

I've gone through Folder Options and although I can apply a view to all folders in Windows Explorer it doesn't seem to apply that to uploading files to the web.

Or am I missing something?

Mike, there's a registry hack which should help with that:

1.Set up all your folders the way you want (auto arrange, view, etc.),
2.Start RegEdit
3.Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
4.Go to NoSaveSettings
5.Modify and change Value to 1

Alan.

Well, of course, nothing is ever that easy with this machine...

I couldn't run RegEdit because it "has been disabled by the Administrator" (even though my User Account is Computer Administrator) but I do have TuneUp Utilities and that has it's own Registry Editor.

But when I got to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" all I get is NoDriveTypeAutoRun.

If I search the registry for NoSaveSettings I get several references and the closest is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Program Manager\Restrictions

So, rather than mess with that, how can I, as the Administrator, enable RegEdit? How about Administrative Tools; Services; Alerter (which is currently disabled)...? What happens if I enable that?

Do you mean your user account has administrator privileges, or are you actually logging on to the administrator account? There could be a difference.

I don't know why you can't run regedit on your computer. Are you still using ME?

The pc I'm using is one I brought home from work, since I do a lot of "homework" on it... It's running XP and I'm logging onto the only user account that's available...

Oddly enough, I used to get the same "disabled by the Administrator" message whenever I tried calling up the Task Manager but, for some reason, I now can...

Since I do most of my photo to storage uploading at work I'll try running RegEdit on that machine although that one is not always entirely cooperative. It seems the previous owner installed a pirate copy of XP Pro and it won't update or network to any other machine...
