So Many Questions!!

Postby moopatch » Wed 09 Aug 2006 13:57

Ok, we are planning to move to Cairns next year subject to visa approval, have never been to Oz & have 100's of questions, will start out with just a few....

firstly my husband is a plumber & we have seen that most jobs request own tools, does anyone know what that entitles, don't want to ship over the wrong stuff or stuff he doesn't need???

Also, could anyone recommend areas/suburbs in Cairns that are nice to live in but reasonable prices renting to start with & then to purchase...

I'll leave it at that now if anyone could help!!

Many Thanks,
K.

Hi Moopatch,
Like you,we have never been to Oz but we're heading out to the Gold Coast area as soon as the house sells.(Soon i hope)
I have just been quoted £600+ to send my tool kit by airfreight as i would need it before 12 weeks in order to start work.I could buy most of what i need for that so I think i may send it by boat and buy the basics over there to do me until it arrives.

I am a Mechanical Fitter to trade so id imagine your husbands tools would be almost identical to what i use.
We got a decent quote from Crown relocations and will now take the TV and Suite ect with us as it would be dearer to take the smaller stuff and replace the larger stuff with new once we arrive.

My friends daughter and friends went travelling for a year and loved Cairns so much that after moving on to Thailand, they decided to go back to Cairns and spent 6 months there, even getting jobs in call centers to keep them going.
I have heard from lots of people that it is beautiful and no one has a bad word to say about the area.
I may be wrong here,as i have been looking at several areas for us to settle before deciding on G.C,but i think Cairns has 2 seasons,a dry and a wet as its a bit more tropical.
Look up realestate.com.au to get an idea on house prices ect.

All the best with your application,

Brido :)

Getting that "Your In" phonecall is the best feeling in the world,
The next best will be someone saying they'll buy the house!

Thanks, that is a great help.
We are still in the very early stages, reckon about another year to go but want to have a good handle on stuff & i can't help myself, i want to know everything, i like to torture myself, can't wait to get there. its great to hear that other people liked Cairns, its a leap of faith when you have never been so positive feedback is always great.
How long would your tools take on the boat & would it be much of a price difference??

Thanks for the feedback, was beginning to think no one would reply!! :D

Hi Moopatch,
Shipping generally takes 10/12 weeks and that is if you have a full container to send over.If not,and you require a part of a container, then they wait until others store in it and its full before sending it on.
There is no fee for weight(a tool box will be heavy) its just based on size so they can fit stuff in the container, for example we are shipping about 8/10 tea chest sized crates a 3 and a 2 seater suite a couch bed and 32" tv and stand complete with dvd player and our PC and its costing us around £1400.
Much cheaper than i thought, without the tv and couches its £700 so its better value to take them as it will cost more to replace them on the other side in our case.

Lol at your last comment! Ive been on here asking everything for the last 12 months, you'll find plenty of good advice in here.

Good luck again

Brido :)
