Finding work with little language skills (near sofia)

Postby Zenettii » Mon 23 Jul 2012 16:43

Hi All,

I'm wondering if someone might be able to share their experience, or part with some advice please.

My girlfriend is from Bulgaria, and the two of us would like to move there in the near future, so the long planning begins.

Be we are both in our early 30's, we'd both need to find work, this shouldn't be so difficult for the Girlfriend, but for me I anticipate I might struggle since I only know a few single words in Bulgarian (some rude, funny, and one or two useful ones). I'm wondering what one might do to try and find work in my situation.

I currently work in IT, but have past experience in the finance world with Project Management, I'd prefer to keep in IT related where possible (programming is a skill I'm learning but not adept at yet). I'm open minded to work and would happily work outdoors if needed. We would aim to move into or around Sofia because my girlfriend has friends and Family around there.

Does anyone have experience of being in a similar situation, moving to Bulgaria with little/no language skills, and trying to find work? I would really appreciate to hear your experience and any tips.

Many thanks.

As a native English speaker, you will find plenty of positions in Sofia - from positions that don't require anything more than your language skills, to positions where your IT skills can come in handy. My partner came from the UK this January and had employers literally fighting over him. Don't expect a huge salary, but be prepared, that you'll be paid at least 30%-40% more for the same work than your Bulgarian colleagues, just because of your native English. Also, don't worry if you don't speak Bulgarian - most of my colleagues don't and I'm working for just one of the many companies that are managed by foreigners and that employ mainly foreigners, so the official operative language there is English.

Gill, we don't allow links and recommendations of this sort on the public boards - otherwise we'd be overwhelmed with spammers, as we explain in the posting guidelines.
